On our trip down to Newport News VA we searched around for a spot to stay overnight. We have stayed at the CAX Campground a few times so it was a no brained.
This is a beautiful park on the Cheatham Annex Naval Weapons Station. As it sounds you must have a valid military ID to get on station. We got in at about 5:30PM and the office was supposed to be open to 6. However, no one was there so we went over to the campground and found a spot. We are also here in February so there was tons of places to park. A quick stop at the camp host, who wasn’t there either, so we just grabbed a spot. We had pre-paid online so not concern there.
The park has about 50 RV sites at $30 a day. The sites are great, flat, each with a picnic table and fire pit.
Check List
- Hook-up – water, electric (30/50), and sewage
- Cleanliness – sites were spotless. We did not go into the facilities but no doubt they would be the same
- Quietness – there was only about a half dozen other RVs and motor homes. All night long all we could hear were the chirps of forest creatures
- Level site -concrete, very flat, did not have to do anything to level
- Internet- unknown
- Mobile Service – the AT&T signal was pretty weak, but with out Netgear M1 and MiMo antenna streaming Netflix was no problem
- Water Pressure – very good 40+
- Facilities – we didn’t check them out. However from previous visits they have a bathhouse and coin laundry
- Walkable Sundries – nothing close
- Local Attractions – Busch Gardens and The Williamsburg Outlets
- Price – $30 per night
